Urbanization and industrialization have led to higher economic growth and improved living conditions in many countries. Equally, these have also contributed to changes in the environment and human health. Notably, a steady rise in the incidence of allergic disorders is observed in many developed countries. Allergy is an immune reaction targeted against any harmless agents. At the Singapore Immunology Network, I am using the state-of-art technologies to investigate the underlying mechanism that results in allergic diseases. This would drive the discovery of new diagnostics biomarkers and therapeutic intervention strategies.

So you hardly think twice about visiting your general practitioner and taking the odd medication prescribed. Or you are experiencing symptoms of the common cold but you feel like maybe if you ask your doctor for antibiotics you will feel better faster. – THINK AGAIN! Severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions are life-threatening painful skin reactions that are most often induced by drugs and while rare, can happen to anyone. Some of these reactions are unfortunately caused by inappropriate use of medications. In this talk, I will show and tell you what these reactions are, what we know and do not yet know about these drug allergies. We will discuss what can be done to possibly avoid such reactions what to look out for when taking a new drug.
